What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively compared 52 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss treated with combined pharmacological therapy and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) to 81 patients who received only pharmacological treatment.
What They Found
The combined therapy group (Group A, 52 patients) showed statistically significantly better hearing improvement across all tested frequencies (500-8000 Hz) and four frequency ranges compared to the pharmacological-only group (Group B, 81 patients). This superior improvement was observed for both relative and absolute hearing values.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that integrating hyperbaric oxygen therapy with high-dose corticosteroids and other medications could offer a more effective treatment for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Canadian patients experiencing this condition might benefit from treatment protocols that include HBO alongside standard pharmacological approaches.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted outside of Canada and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
As a retrospective study, it is subject to inherent limitations such as potential selection bias and confounding factors, and there were significant differences in gender and shape of hearing loss between the groups.
