What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of salvage hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in 84 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) that did not respond to initial steroid combination therapy.
What They Found
The hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) group showed a significantly higher mean hearing gain of 16.8 dB compared to 4.45 dB in the control group. Salvage HBOT demonstrated a significant effect on hearing gain and recovery rate in patients with refractory sudden sensorineural hearing loss after steroid therapy.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss that does not improve with initial steroid treatment, salvage hyperbaric oxygen therapy could be a beneficial additional treatment option. This approach may offer improved hearing recovery for those who currently have limited options after initial therapy failure.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A notable limitation of this study is the significant disparity in the number of patients between the hyperbaric oxygen therapy group (n=18) and the control group (n=66).
