What Researchers Did
The researchers investigated the therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen on sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) by randomly assigning 107 patients to receive either hyperbaric oxygen once daily, twice daily, or no hyperbaric oxygen, all in addition to conventional treatment.
What They Found
The overall effective rate was 78.9% in patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen once daily and 81.5% in those receiving it twice daily, compared to 61.9% in the conventional treatment group. Hearing threshold improvements were 27.2 dB HL and 26.9 dB HL for the hyperbaric oxygen groups, respectively, versus 17.6 dB HL for the conventional treatment group.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss might benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunct to conventional treatments. This could potentially lead to better hearing recovery outcomes for those affected by this condition.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
A limitation is that the full statistical analysis and detailed patient characteristics were not provided in the abstract.
