What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a one-group pretest-posttest study with 34 patients to examine the efficacy of nurse-led hyperbaric oxygen therapy in improving quality of life for those with sudden hearing loss.
What They Found
After nurse-led hyperbaric oxygen therapy, patients showed significant increases in quality of life ratings (from 2.59 to 3.68) and satisfaction with health status (from 2.65 to 3.62) (p < 0.001). All domains of quality of life, including physical (11.58 to 14.84), psychological (12.80 to 15.82), social (14.63 to 16.78), and environmental (14.25 to 16.34), also significantly improved. Overall, the therapy increased quality of life and decreased hearing loss.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing sudden hearing loss, nurse-led hyperbaric oxygen therapy could be a beneficial treatment option to improve their overall quality of life. This approach may help address both the physical and psychological impacts of hearing loss, potentially leading to better patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in a university hospital outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is its one-group pretest-posttest design, which lacks a control group for comparison.
