What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the combined use of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) and extremely high frequency (SHF) waves in 33 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), some of whom also had chronic prostatitis.
What They Found
The combined therapy showed positive improvements in urination, especially for patients with BPH and chronic prostatitis. In this group, mean urination frequency reduced from 14.8-8.5 times to 6.3, and mean urine volume increased from 83.6 to 199 ml. The International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS) fell by 2 points in patients without inflammation and by 6.4 points in those with chronic prostatitis, with quality of life also improving.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that combining hyperbaric oxygen therapy with SHF waves could help manage urination problems in Canadian men with benign prostatic hyperplasia, especially if they also suffer from chronic prostatitis. The therapy might lead to fewer trips to the washroom and increased urine volume, potentially improving daily comfort and quality of life.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted by Canadian authors or in Canada. Benign prostatic hyperplasia and chronic prostatitis are not currently Health Canada-recognized indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
The study involved a small number of patients and lacked a control group, which limits the generalizability of its findings.
