What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment on 38 patients with refractory interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) by assessing clinical symptoms and the expression of vascular endothelial growth inhibitor (VEGI) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) before and 6 months after treatment.
What They Found
After 6 months of HBO treatment, patients experienced significant improvements in symptoms, including a reduction in 24-hour voiding frequency (15.32 ± 5.38 times) and nocturia (3.71 ± 1.80 times), alongside better O'leary-Sant (20.45 ± 5.62 points), VAS (41.76 ± 17.88 points), QoL (3.03 ± 1.44 points), and PUF scores (19.95 ± 6.46 points) (p < 0.05). Concurrently, the expression levels of VEGI and HIF-1α protein and mRNA in bladder tissue significantly decreased.

Study Limitations
Limitations include the small sample size of 38 patients and the lack of a control group, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
