What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed the clinical course of ten burn patients with carbon monoxide poisoning to identify complications during hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
What They Found
Among ten patients, two experienced eustachian tube occlusion, two had aspiration episodes, and one suffered seizure activity, while another developed severe hypocalcemia. Three patients developed progressive hypovolemia, four had respiratory acidosis, and three experienced cardiac dysrhythmia, with seven of the ten patients surviving.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with burns and carbon monoxide poisoning should be aware that hyperbaric oxygen therapy may carry significant risks without proven benefit. Further research is needed to determine if this treatment is truly effective and safe for this patient population.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A major limitation of this study is its small sample size of ten patients, which prevents drawing definitive conclusions about hyperbaric oxygen efficacy or safety.
