What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effect of ultra-early treatment (within 6 hours) for sudden deafness, compared to later treatment, on hearing recovery and serum markers in 147 patients.
What They Found
Patients receiving ultra-early treatment (within 6 hours) for sudden deafness demonstrated significantly better hearing improvement compared to those treated within 15 days (P < 0.01) or after 15 days (P < 0.01). For instance, in the ultra-early group, 18 ears recovered and 9 significantly improved, whereas in the group treated within 15 days, 11 ears recovered and 16 significantly improved.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sudden deafness should seek medical attention as quickly as possible, ideally within hours of onset. Prompt diagnosis and initiation of treatment may significantly improve their chances of hearing recovery.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's findings may be limited by its non-randomized design and the age of the data.
