What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of a combined videotaped coping model and film distraction technique to reduce distress in adults undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What They Found
Five experimental patients (aged 34-68) who received the intervention experienced less arousal and rated themselves as significantly more relaxed before treatment compared to 6 control patients (aged 17-53). The experimental group also completed significantly more prescribed treatments without complication and required fewer days in the hospital.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy might benefit from similar modeling and distraction techniques to reduce anxiety and improve their treatment experience. This approach could potentially lead to better adherence to treatment plans and shorter hospital stays.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada or with Canadian participants.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is the very small sample size of only 11 participants, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
