What does the Canada Hyperbarics research database contain?

The Canada Hyperbarics research database contains 14,708 PubMed-indexed HBOT-related records, sourced from PubMed and updated weekly (Thursdays). The database spans human clinical studies, systematic reviews, case reports, and preclinical research; not every record is a clinically actionable human study. Filter by clinical condition, study type (RCT, systematic review, case series), evidence tier, year, or Canadian-authored records (249 total). Each study includes a structured 5-section AI-generated summary covering question, methods, key findings, clinical takeaways, and limitations, with citation and a link to the original publication.

The influence of hypoxia on tissue regeneration in oral and maxillofacial surgery - a systematic review

Gäde A, Schiegnitz E, Eckert A, Sagheb K, Al-Nawas B, Kupka J

Out of 5790 initial studies, nine met the inclusion criteria for this review. These studies examined interventions such as gene therapy targeting HIF-1α, oxygen-releasing biomaterial scaffolds, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, and hypoxia preconditioning of stem cells. While some interventions showed enhanced bone formation and vascularization, hyperbaric oxygen treatment consistently improved bone healing.

The effectiveness of different treatment methods in the treatment and prevention of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis

Zhang N, Jiang M, Zhang C, Pan Y, Xu R

This systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis of 1,064 patients with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw found that the treatments studied improved healing rates compared to conventional surgery alone (RR 1.44, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.71, p less than 0.001) and reduced new cases in high-risk patients (RR 0.10, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.29, p less than 0.001). When treatments were ranked by a probability-weighted score called SUCRA, BMP-2 combined with L-PRF scored highest for healing (89.3%), hyperbaric oxygen scored second (84.1%), and YAG laser combined with low-level laser therapy scored third (67.8%). These SUCRA scores reflect a statistical ranking across the network of studies, not a measured cure or success rate for any single treatment.

Treatment of Sleep Disorders Following Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Wang Y, Yan J, Su L, Wang B

This systematic review and network meta-analysis of 22 randomized controlled trials with 1299 patients found that several non-drug treatments, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), significantly improved sleep outcomes compared with control treatments after TBI. Cognitive behavioral therapy (4 trials), acupuncture (2 trials), transcranial direct current stimulation (1 trial), and branched-chain amino acids (1 trial) were particularly effective for the Insomnia Severity Index score. For the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score, cognitive behavioral therapy, acupuncture, transcranial direct current stimulation, HBOT (1 trial), and problem-solving therapy (1 trial) showed significant effects. Only cognitive behavioral therapy was found to improve the Epworth Sleepiness Scale score. Drug treatment did not show superior efficacy.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Managing Chronic Pain Syndromes - A Systematic Review

Leys A, Hans G, Saldien V, Wildemeersch D

The review included eleven randomised controlled trials with a total of 480 participants, primarily focusing on fibromyalgia (8 studies) with sample sizes ranging from 17 to 71 participants. For fibromyalgia patients, HBOT consistently improved pain, daily functioning, and quality of life, with some studies showing better results compared to control groups. There was limited evidence of possible benefit for complex regional pain syndrome and trigeminal neuralgia, but no meaningful improvement was found for radiation-induced brachial plexopathy.

Gas Therapies for Chronic Wounds: Comparative Effectiveness, Safety, and Evidence Certainty-A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Zheng X, Li T, Wang J, Gao L

This review included 27 randomised controlled trials with 1673 participants. Overall, gas therapies significantly increased complete wound healing compared to standard care, with a risk ratio of 2.17 (95% CI 1.61-2.94). However, a network analysis ranked standard care highest for effectiveness (93.9%), with ozone therapy and topical oxygen ranking next, and HBOT ranking mid-range.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers: A Prospective Randomised Controlled Trial

Nikolić D, Pasternak J, Manojlović V, Budinski S, Nikolić M, Batinić N

In this open-label randomised trial of 80 adults with venous leg ulcers that had not responded to standard care, the group receiving hyperbaric oxygen (20 sessions at 2.4 ATA, 90 minutes) plus standard care had a larger reduction in ulcer area at 30 days than the standard-care-only group (62.1% versus 41.7%, p less than 0.001). Complete healing by 90 days occurred in 62.5% of the hyperbaric oxygen group versus 30.0% of the standard-care group. Oxygen levels in the tissue (TcPO2) rose from 26.1 to 150.3 mmHg in the hyperbaric oxygen group, and pain scores dropped more in that group as well. Three patients (7.5%) had mild ear barotrauma that resolved on its own.

Adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy for post-stroke cognitive impairment: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Hu X, Zhao S, Zhang D, Meng X

This meta-analysis of 35 randomized controlled trials with 3,036 participants found that adding HBOT was linked to higher scores on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), by an average of 2.90 points (95% CI: 2.47-3.33). Scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination also rose by 2.68 points on average. Stroke severity scores (NIHSS) improved by 2.61 points, and daily living scores improved on the Modified Barthel Index (6.64 points) and the Barthel Index (8.77 points). Results varied a lot between trials (I2 of 82% to 93%), and the certainty of the evidence was low for MoCA, MMSE and MBI and very low for NIHSS and BI.

Effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Myocardial Injury and Inflammatory Biomarkers: A Systematic Review With Qualitative Synthesis

Almomany M, Rawashdeh Z, Alshyyab M, Alnabulsi A, Alodat L, Alshamaly S, et al.

Five clinical studies involving 431 patients showed that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) reduced CPK levels by up to 35% and improved heart function in acute heart attacks. HBOT also lowered inflammation and heart damage markers after cardiac surgery and reduced inflammatory markers in chronic heart disease.
