What Researchers Did
Researchers modified a standard blood pressure monitor to safely and continuously measure blood pressure in people undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What They Found
The researchers successfully modified a commercial blood pressure device by replacing its pump, altering the power supply, and changing capacitors to make it safe for hyperbaric environments. Under normal pressure, the modified device showed no significant differences compared to the original. When tested at 243 kPa (2.4 ATA), the modified device provided stable, continuous blood pressure readings that matched standard intermittent measurements.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is the small sample size, as the device was tested on only five healthy volunteers.
