What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a retrospective review of patient medical records to assess factors influencing outcomes of diabetic foot ulcers treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy.
What They Found
Of 30 patients, 73.3% achieved a successful outcome, with 70% remaining successful at 3 months. Steroid therapy, peripheral vascular disease, previous minor amputation, type of diabetes, previous HBO therapy, larvae therapy, interactive dressings, and haemoglobin A1c levels significantly influenced patient outcome (P < 0.05).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
HBO therapy may offer a beneficial treatment option for diabetic foot ulcers, potentially improving healing rates and reducing the need for major amputations. Canadian patients with diabetic foot ulcers should discuss all available treatment options, including HBO, with their healthcare providers.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
This retrospective study was limited by its small sample size of 30 patients and the need for improved patient documentation.
