What Researchers Did
Doctors reviewed cases of patients with pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), a painful skin ulcer condition that is hard to treat, and reported on outcomes when HBOT was added to standard care.
What They Found
One patient with treatment-resistant PG achieved full remission after receiving HBOT as an add-on therapy. When the same patient later had a flare and did not receive HBOT, achieving remission was significantly harder. The cases suggest HBOT may be a key part of getting this condition under control.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Pyoderma gangrenosum is notoriously difficult to treat and can cause severe, disfiguring ulcers. Canadians with PG that has not responded to steroids or immunosuppressants may want to discuss HBOT with a wound care specialist. Access to medically supervised HBOT at an accredited Canadian centre would be the starting point.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
This is a single case report, so no conclusions about effectiveness can be drawn for the broader PG population.
