What Researchers Did
Researchers compared cardiovascular markers and electrocardiography findings in diabetic patients before and after their first hyperbaric oxygen therapy session.
What They Found
After one session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, diabetic patients showed a statistically significant increase in QTc and QTc dispersion measurements (p<0.001 and p=0.02, respectively). There was also a statistically significant increase in troponin I values (p=0.009), though Pro-BNP levels did not change significantly (p=0.3).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian diabetic patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy may experience changes in cardiovascular markers, indicating potential cardiac stress. Clinicians should closely monitor these patients for cardiovascular effects during and after HBO2 sessions.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in Turkey.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its focus on only the first hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, limiting insights into long-term effects.
