What Researchers Did
Researchers reported the case of a 22-year-old woman who developed branch retinal artery occlusion while undergoing Methotrexate therapy for an un-ruptured ectopic pregnancy.
What They Found
The patient received an initial 50 mg/m2 dose of Methotrexate, followed by a second 50 mg/m2 dose due to nondecreasing β-HCG levels. On the 12th day of treatment, she experienced sudden painless vision loss in her right eye, diagnosed as superior temporal branch retinal artery occlusion. After one month of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, complete recovery of vision was achieved.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case highlights a rare but serious thromboembolic complication of Methotrexate therapy for ectopic pregnancy. Canadian clinicians should be aware of this potential side effect and counsel patients accordingly, even though it is uncommon.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it is a case report from outside Canada.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings cannot be generalized to a larger patient population.
