What Researchers Did
Researchers reported on a rare case where a 73-year-old man developed a stroke-like event during his first hyperbaric oxygen treatment session for a chronic leg wound.
What They Found
A 73-year-old man experienced acute neurological deficits, including a stroke-like event, during the decompression phase of his first HBOT session for a chronic lower limb wound. Imaging revealed acute brain infarction and previously unknown lung cysts, suggesting that oxygen bubbles entered his bloodstream through a temporary lung tear. The patient recovered well with supportive care, showing only minimal residual effects.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted by Canadian authors or in Canada. However, it covers a complication related to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is a Health Canada-recognized treatment for indications such as diabetic foot ulcers, a type of chronic wound.
Study Limitations
As a case report, this study describes a single, exceptionally rare event and its findings cannot be generalized to all patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
