What Researchers Did
Researchers at a single center investigated the effectiveness of early hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HOT) for severe late-onset hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) in pediatric patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).
What They Found
Of 10 pediatric patients who developed severe HC after HSCT, seven (70%) achieved complete remission after a median of 10 sessions of HOT. HOT was initiated a median of six days after clinical diagnosis and was found to be a well-tolerated procedure in the pediatric setting.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted at a single center outside of Canada, so there is no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The main limitation is the small sample size and single-center, non-randomized design, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
