What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a prospective cohort study to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunctive treatment for 40 patients with complex wounds.
What They Found
Of the 40 patients, 31 (77.5%) achieved wound healing after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Wound size significantly reduced by an average of 29.7% after 5 treatments (p = 1.24 × 10-6) and by an additional 16.9% after 10 treatments (p = 0.0002). No complications were reported during the study.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with complex, non-healing wounds may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy as an adjunctive treatment. This therapy could potentially accelerate wound healing and reduce the need for further interventions.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study was limited by its small sample size of 40 patients and the absence of a control group for comparison.
