What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated how electroretinography (ERG) changes correlated with visual recovery in 15 patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) who received a combined treatment including hyperbaric oxygenation.
What They Found
Out of 15 patients with central retinal artery occlusion, 8 (53%) experienced improved vision after treatment. The study found that the b/a wave amplitude ratio from electroretinography was significantly higher in eyes with improved visual acuity (0.83 +/- 0.03) compared to those without improvement (0.62 +/- 0.05). The b-wave amplitude also increased in line with visual improvement.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with central retinal artery occlusion, this study suggests that electroretinography could be a useful tool to predict visual recovery. While hyperbaric oxygenation was part of the combined treatment, this research indicates that monitoring ERG changes might help doctors understand a patient's chances of regaining vision.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified. Central retinal artery occlusion is not a Health Canada-recognized indication for hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Study Limitations
This study involved a very small number of patients (15) and was conducted over 30 years ago, making it difficult to draw broad conclusions for current practice.
