What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a one-year prospective survey using online questionnaires with 55 Finnish technical divers to report diving activity, decompression illness (DCI) symptoms, and treatment outcomes.
What They Found
Out of 2,983 dives reported by 55 Finnish technical divers, 27 resulted in decompression illness (DCI) symptoms, an incidence of 91 per 10,000 dives. All reported DCI symptoms were mild, with only one diver receiving hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT); self-treatment, primarily oral hydration and rest, was 27 times more common than HBOT.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian technical divers experiencing decompression illness symptoms should seek professional medical evaluation rather than relying solely on self-treatment. Adhering to established medical protocols for DCI, including potential recompression therapy, is crucial for optimal outcomes and safety.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Finland and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation is the reliance on self-reported data from a small, specific group of divers, which may introduce reporting bias and limit generalizability.
