What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed 179 cases of decompression sickness treated with recompression therapy in Turkey between 1963 and 1998.
What They Found
Symptoms developed within the first hour for 87% of divers, with sensory loss being the most frequent. A significant delay in treatment was observed, as 84% of divers received recompression therapy after more than 12 hours. Oxygen recompression tables showed a higher healing rate of 86% compared to 68% for air tables.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian divers experiencing decompression sickness should seek immediate medical attention to minimize treatment delays. Utilizing oxygen-based recompression therapy, when available, may improve recovery outcomes for divers.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection, as it reviewed cases exclusively from Turkey.
Study Limitations
A limitation is the retrospective design, reviewing cases from 1963 to 1998, which may reflect outdated practices and inconsistent data collection.
