What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a prospective observational study of 69 SCUBA divers admitted for decompression sickness (DCS) to a hyperbaric center near Paris, France, between 1993 and 2003.
What They Found
They found that 63% of divers presented with atypical symptoms, and 59% experienced symptom onset more than two hours after diving. First aid was often inadequate, with only 23% receiving oxygen, fluid, and aspirin. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) was administered to 42 (61%) patients, even those with normal examination results.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian divers, especially those in urban areas, should be aware of the varied and often delayed presentation of decompression sickness symptoms. Prompt recognition and adequate first aid, including oxygen and hydration, are crucial for improving outcomes before specialized hyperbaric treatment.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in France and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This observational study was limited to a single hyperbaric center in France, potentially limiting the generalizability of its findings to other populations or settings.
