Researchers investigated how nitrogen narcosis affects pain perception by having 22 subjects undergo a cold pressure test during both an experimental hyperbaric dive at 50 meters and a simulated control dive at surface pressure.

The study found that perceived pain intensity was significantly reduced under nitrogen narcosis conditions (p < 0.034) compared to control dive conditions (p = 0.371). However, no connection was found between the perceived pain intensity and subjects' subjective experience of nitrogen narcosis (r = 0.287, p = 0.195).
