What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in 359 patients with acute and chronic inner ear disorders who had not responded to prior medication.
What They Found
For hearing loss, 13% of patients with symptoms for less than 3 months showed noticeable improvement (≥20 dB), and 25.2% improved by 10-20 dB. Patients with chronic hearing loss (over 3 months) had less benefit, with 2% regaining normal function and 30% improving by more than 10 dB. For tinnitus, 6.7% of acute patients (less than 3 months) showed excellent improvement and 44.3% showed noticeable improvement, while chronic tinnitus patients (over 3 months) had less favorable responses, with 34.4% reporting noticeable improvement.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy might offer some benefit for Canadian patients experiencing acute inner ear disorders, particularly hearing loss, if conventional treatments are ineffective. However, the benefits appear significantly reduced for those with chronic conditions, indicating that earlier intervention might be more effective.
Canadian Relevance
There is no direct Canadian connection mentioned in this study.
Study Limitations
The study lacks a control group, making it difficult to definitively attribute observed improvements solely to hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
