What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of pharmacologic therapy combined with hyperbaric oxygen in 12 patients (22 ears) with sensorineural hearing loss following acute acoustic trauma.
What They Found
A statistically significant improvement in Pure Tone Audiometry results was observed at 4 kHz for all trauma causes and at 6 kHz for shooting-related damage. Furthermore, a significant difference was noted at 6 kHz when hyperbaric oxygen therapy continued for over 10 days (p < 0.00001).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients experiencing sensorineural hearing loss due to acute acoustic trauma might benefit from a combined treatment of pharmacologic therapy and hyperbaric oxygen. Early intervention and extended hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially improve hearing outcomes.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Poland and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this preliminary report is the very small sample size of only 12 patients.
