What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed 51 earthquake victims treated with HBOT in Turkey to see whether HBOT helped save injured limbs and restore movement and feeling.
What They Found
After HBOT, 64.7% of patients recovered sensation and 62.7% recovered functional movement in injured limbs. Despite the severity of injuries, only 19.6% needed minor amputation and 9.8% needed major amputation, and no patients died during treatment. Patients with higher injury severity scores had lower recovery rates but did not have significantly higher amputation rates.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadians with severe crush injuries from accidents, industrial injuries, or disasters, this study suggests HBOT may help preserve limb function even in serious cases. The 62–65% recovery rate for sensation and movement is meaningful for patients who might otherwise face amputation or permanent disability.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified. Crush injuries are not a standard OHIP-covered HBOT indication in Ontario.
Study Limitations
This was a retrospective study of a specific disaster population with no comparison group, so results may not apply to typical trauma patients.
