What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 trials involving 255 patients to assess the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).
What They Found
They found that extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) was superior to standard wound care for complete wound healing in diabetic foot ulcers, with an odds ratio of 2.66 (95% CI 1.03, 6.87). However, ESWT was not superior to hyperbaric oxygen therapy for complete wound healing (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.38, 2.58).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
While extracorporeal shockwave therapy shows potential for improving diabetic foot ulcer healing, it is not yet recommended for routine clinical use. Patients should continue to rely on established standard wound care and discuss all treatment options with their healthcare providers.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation is the high risk of bias in the included studies, which may affect the true effect size of the findings.
