What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of free omental transfer for treating osteoradionecrosis of the mandible in four patients.
What They Found
Among four patients who received omental transfers for osteoradionecrosis of the mandible, intractable pain improved in all cases. No patient experienced recurrence of osteoradionecrosis or wound dehiscence, although two cases developed pathologic fractures postoperatively which were successfully managed.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This technique offers a potential new surgical option for Canadian patients suffering from severe osteoradionecrosis of the mandible, a debilitating complication of head and neck cancer treatment. It suggests a method to alleviate intractable pain and prevent recurrence without requiring extensive bone resection.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is the very small sample size of only four patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
