What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as an adjunct treatment for venous leg ulcers (VLU).
What They Found
Six studies were included, but significant heterogeneity prevented a definitive conclusion regarding HBOT's efficacy for VLU. Pooled analysis of two studies with 12-week follow-up showed no statistically significant difference in complete ulcer healing between HBOT and controls (OR 1.54, 95%CI = 0.50-4.75, P = 0.4478), with similar non-significant results in four studies at 5-6 weeks (OR 5.39, 95%CI = 0.57-259.57, P = 0.1136).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Currently, there is insufficient evidence to recommend hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a routine adjunct treatment for venous leg ulcers in Canadian patients. Patients with venous leg ulcers should continue to rely on established care protocols, as HBOT's benefit for this condition remains unproven.
Canadian Relevance
This systematic review did not include any Canadian studies or specific Canadian patient populations, thus it has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The included studies showed significant heterogeneity in control interventions, outcome reporting, and follow-up duration, limiting the ability to draw strong conclusions.
