What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) in preventing osteoradionecrosis (ORN) following tooth extraction in 37 patients with a history of jaw irradiation.
What They Found
Among 29 patients receiving HBO, only one (4%) developed osteoradionecrosis (ORN) after tooth extraction. In contrast, seven of the eight patients who did not receive HBO developed ORN.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing tooth extraction after jaw irradiation may benefit from prophylactic hyperbaric oxygen therapy to significantly reduce their risk of osteoradionecrosis. This approach could improve post-surgical outcomes and quality of life for those treated for head and neck malignancies.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Australia and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its relatively small sample size and observational nature, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
