What Researchers Did
Researchers treated 14 patients with advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using one-hour sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) at either 1.75 ATA or 1.5 ATA.
What They Found
Among the 14 patients with advanced AMD, significant improvements were observed in visual acuity and/or visual field. These improvements were noted in patients treated at both 1.75 ATA (8 patients) and 1.5 ATA (6 patients), leading to better activities of daily living.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may offer a potential new treatment approach for Canadian patients experiencing advanced age-related macular degeneration. If further research confirms these preliminary findings, it could lead to improved vision and daily function for those affected by AMD.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian participants or researchers.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is its very small sample size of only 14 patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
