What Researchers Did
Researchers reported on a 10-year-old male with frosted branch angiitis and Purtscher-like retinopathy who received systemic corticosteroids, anti-viral agents, immunosuppressants, and later hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a rescue strategy.
What They Found
The patient presented with sudden bilateral painless visual loss, and investigations revealed a recent herpes simplex virus 2 infection, positive antinuclear antibody (1:640), and abnormal liver function tests. While initial treatments alleviated frosted branch angiitis, persistent Purtscher-like retinopathy and macular ischaemia led to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which resulted in gradual bilateral visual acuity improvement.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it is a case report from outside Canada.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, this study's findings are limited in generalizability and require further investigation in larger cohorts.
