What Researchers Did
Researchers surveyed 152 doctors in Malta to assess their awareness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy indications and factors influencing referral rates.
What They Found
Out of 152 surveyed doctors, those who had visited a hyperbaric unit (p=0.002) or attended an HBO2 lecture (p=0.006) showed better awareness of HBO2 indications. A previous hyperbaric unit visit (p=0.001), being a hospital-based doctor (p=0.027), and a history of scuba diving (p=0.03) were significantly associated with a willingness to refer patients for HBO2.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Improving Canadian doctors' awareness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy through education and exposure could lead to more appropriate referrals for patients who could benefit. This could ensure that patients with conditions treatable by HBO2 receive timely and effective care.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Malta and has no direct Canadian connection. However, its findings on physician awareness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be relevant to healthcare systems globally, including Canada.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is that it was conducted in a single developed country (Malta), which may limit the generalizability of its findings to other healthcare systems.
