What Researchers Did
Researchers reported their experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy in five children treated for brain abscesses at a neurosurgery department in Graz, Austria, between 1995 and 2002.
What They Found
All five children, with a mean age of 14.8 years, received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mean 30 treatments) alongside surgical interventions and intravenous antibiotics for 13 to 22 days. All patients improved clinically during their hospital stay, showing continued regression of abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that hyperbaric oxygen therapy, when used as part of a multimodal treatment approach, may be a beneficial adjunctive treatment for children with brain abscesses. Canadian pediatric neurosurgery teams could consider this therapy as an option for complex cases, although further research is needed.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Austria and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The main limitation of this study is its very small sample size of five patients, which limits the generalizability of the findings.
