What Researchers Did
Researchers described the successful use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat a severe, antibiotic-resistant perinephritic abscess in a 68-year-old patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
What They Found
The patient, who had been febrile and septic for three weeks despite multiple antibiotic regimens, underwent 26 daily sessions of 100% hyperbaric oxygen at 2.5 atm. This therapy led to a notable improvement, and she was discharged after day 58 without signs of inflammatory activity or infection reactivation.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients with severe, complicated infections unresponsive to standard antibiotic treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially be considered as an alternative therapeutic tool. This approach might offer a new option for managing difficult cases, especially in patients with underlying conditions like polycystic kidney disease.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings cannot be generalized to a broader patient population.
