What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a pilot study to evaluate the effect of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) on visual acuity in patients with acute central or branch retinal artery occlusion.
What They Found
Among 8 patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy, visual acuity (VA) increased by a mean of 1 line, with 4 of 8 patients improving by 2 or more lines. For 10 patients with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), VA increased by a mean of 8 lines, and 8 of 10 patients showed an increase of 2 or more lines.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy could potentially offer an additional treatment option for Canadian patients experiencing acute retinal artery occlusion, a condition that often leads to significant vision loss. However, as a pilot study, more extensive research is needed to confirm these benefits and establish clear treatment guidelines for its use in clinical practice.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Germany and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This was a pilot study with a small sample size and the abstract did not provide comparative results from the control group, limiting the generalizability of the findings.
