What Researchers Did
Researchers conducted a systematic review of 30 clinical and pre-clinical studies on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2) for acute severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).
What They Found
The review of 22 pre-clinical studies consistently reported positive treatment effects and almost no safety concerns for HBO2 in acute severe TBI. Eight clinical studies showed HBO2 significantly improved physiologic measures without toxicity and potentially improved clinical outcomes, providing preliminary data for the HOBIT trial.
Canadian Relevance
This systematic review did not include any Canadian studies or researchers.
Study Limitations
The clinical evidence supporting hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute severe TBI is still preliminary, with only eight clinical studies reviewed.
