Researchers investigated if hyperbaric oxygen treatment could reduce kidney damage caused by a lack of blood flow and subsequent reperfusion in rats.
What They Found
This animal model study found that hyperbaric oxygen treatment significantly reduced kidney injury in rats, as evidenced by lower blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels (p < 0.05). Rats receiving two sessions of hyperbaric oxygen (90 minutes at 1.6 ATA) showed improved kidney structure and reduced activation of necroptosis, a type of cell death. The treatment also lessened severe tubular damage and neutrophil infiltration seen in untreated rats with kidney injury.
