What Researchers Did
Four patients with nonacute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) or branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) received hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
What They Found
Two patients with nonarteritic CRAO, who presented within one day of symptom onset, showed improvement in visual acuity and visual field from initial acuities ranging from light perception to counting fingers at 6 feet. The other two patients, who presented with longer histories of CRAO, did not improve. No complications were reported during the treatment.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
For Canadian patients experiencing nonacute, nonarteritic central retinal artery occlusion, hyperbaric oxygen treatment may offer a potential therapeutic option, particularly if initiated early. However, due to the very limited evidence, this treatment is not yet a standard recommendation and would require further research.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection or specific relevance to Canadian healthcare practices mentioned.
Study Limitations
The primary limitation of this study is its extremely small sample size of only four patients, which prevents generalizable conclusions.
