What Researchers Did
Researchers treated 77 patients with chronic ischemic heart disease using 12-15 sessions of hyperbaric oxygenation in single-seater chambers, combined with drug therapy.
What They Found
Researchers found that combining hyperbaric oxygenation with drug therapy alleviated angina pectoris in 52 patients and relieved cardiac decompensation symptoms in 25 patients with macrofocal postinfarction cardiosclerosis. While normal hemodynamic parameters were largely unaffected, patients with reduced myocardial contractility showed evident positive hemodynamic changes, significantly improving treatment effects.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This study suggests that hyperbaric oxygenation, when combined with standard drug therapy, could potentially offer a complementary approach to manage symptoms of chronic ischemic heart disease. However, given the age of the study, modern treatment guidelines and further research would be necessary to determine its current applicability for Canadian patients.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted in 1979 and does not involve Canadian researchers, institutions, or patients.
Study Limitations
Limitations include the study's small sample size of 77 patients and its age, which means its findings may not align with current medical practices or evidence standards.
