What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on blood pressure, heart rate, and blood glucose levels in 41 patients with hypertension, diabetes, or both.
What They Found
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly elevated systolic blood pressure by 11% and diastolic blood pressure by 12%, while decreasing heart rate by 18% (p <0.001). It also lowered blood glucose levels by 23% (p <0.001), with 52% of sessions showing a drop to below 100 mg/dl when initial levels were between 120-170 mg/dl.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, especially those with hypertension or diabetes, should be closely monitored for changes in blood pressure and blood glucose. The use of beta blockers for managing hypertension should be avoided during HBO2 therapy due to potential significant blood pressure elevation.
Canadian Relevance
This study was not conducted in Canada and does not have a direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study involved a relatively small number of patients and did not specify long-term outcomes or potential adverse effects beyond the immediate session.
