What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the long-term effects and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in 12 patients with active livedoid vasculopathy.
What They Found
Among eight patients who completed treatment, ambulation resumed and analgesic use decreased after an average of 4.9 hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions. Leg ulcers healed completely in all eight patients within a mean of 3.4 weeks (range 2-5 weeks), and six patients experienced relapses that responded to further therapy.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients suffering from livedoid vasculopathy might find hyperbaric oxygen therapy to be a safe and effective option for managing their painful leg ulcers. This treatment could potentially lead to faster healing and reduced pain, improving their quality of life.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was not conducted in Canada, nor did it involve Canadian researchers or patients.
Study Limitations
A key limitation of this study is the small sample size of only eight patients who completed the hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
