What Researchers Did
Researchers studied how breathing cool gas in a warm hyperbaric chamber affected the body temperature of four men.
What They Found
They found that men's rectal temperature dropped significantly, from 0.43 +/- 0.13 degrees C at 640 feet seawater (fsw) to 0.98 +/- 0.15 degrees C at 1,800 fsw after 60 minutes. The body's metabolic rate increased when the core temperature dropped faster than 0.70 degrees C per hour, but this increase was offset by more heat loss from breathing.
Canadian Relevance
No direct Canadian connection identified.
Study Limitations
A limitation of this study is its small sample size, involving only four male participants.
