What Researchers Did
Researchers retrospectively studied four comatose carbon monoxide-poisoned patients who did not receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy to assess their neuropsychologic and functional recovery.
What They Found
All four patients demonstrated normal performance on a neuropsychologic test battery and the Folstein Mini-Mental Status Examination at 6 months. Furthermore, all patients achieved normal functional outcomes.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This suggests that some Canadian patients with severe carbon monoxide poisoning may achieve full recovery without hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This could potentially reduce the need for specialized treatments, making care more accessible.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it was conducted at a large, urban tertiary hospital outside of Canada.
Study Limitations
A significant limitation of this study is its very small sample size of only four patients, which limits generalizability.
