What Researchers Did
Researchers described the first reported case of partial vision recovery in a 32-year-old woman who experienced retinal artery occlusion after a cosmetic injection.
What They Found
A 32-year-old woman developed left eye retinal artery occlusion and a bilateral visual field defect after a glabella calcium hydroxylapatite injection. Following various treatments including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, her best corrected visual acuity in the left eye improved from hand motion at 15 cm to 0.1.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This case suggests that some vision recovery may be possible for patients experiencing retinal artery occlusion following cosmetic injections. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, among other treatments, might be considered as an adjuvant therapy in such rare complications.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection as it is a case report from outside Canada.
Study Limitations
As a single case report, the findings cannot be generalized to a larger patient population.
