What Researchers Did
Researchers investigated the accuracy and function of four different infusion pump models when used under high-pressure hyperbaric conditions.
What They Found
The Easy-pump MZ-257 failed completely beyond 1.4 atmospheres absolute (ATA), and the Graseby 3100's keyboard stopped working at 2.5-2.8 ATA. The Imed 965 generally performed within an acceptable 10% volume deviation, but showed exceptional 20-40% deviations during the compression phase at low infusion rates. The Infutec 520 consistently maintained an acceptable deviation within 10% throughout all tested hyperbaric profiles.
Canadian Relevance
This study covers equipment used for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, including protocols for decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism, which are Health Canada-recognized indications.
Study Limitations
The study tested only a few specific infusion pump models, and the technology may have advanced significantly since the study was published in 2002.
