What Researchers Did
Researchers reviewed medical records of hyperbaric oxygen therapy patients to investigate if peripheral neuropathy increases the risk of asymptomatic otic barotrauma.
What They Found
Out of 38 patients with otic barotrauma, asymptomatic otic barotrauma occurred significantly more often in neuropathic patients (56%) compared to non-neuropathic patients (5%, p < 0.001). Neuropathic patients also had significantly higher modified Teed scores (mTeed 2: 65% vs. 36%) and shorter mean compression times (10.5 vs. 14.4 minutes, p < 0.001).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients with peripheral neuropathy undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be closely monitored for otic barotrauma, even if they report no ear pain. Healthcare providers should be aware of this increased risk to prevent potential complications from undetected ear injuries.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study was a retrospective review of a limited number of patients from a single center, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
