What Researchers Did
Researchers quantified the rates of visual acuity changes in patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy in both monoplace and multiplace chambers.
What They Found
Of 85 patients, 28% experienced at least a 2-line worsening in visual acuity, while 40% had no change and 32% had a 1-line change. Monoplace chamber patients more frequently reached 20/40 or worse vision (32%) compared to multiplace patients (18%).
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy should be informed about the potential for visual acuity changes, including significant worsening. Regular monitoring of vision during treatment is advisable to detect and manage these side effects promptly.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
The study's retrospective design and reliance on quality improvement data limit the generalizability of its findings.
