What Researchers Did
A retrospective chart analysis was conducted at The Townsville Hospital to compare differences between patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy and concurrent grommet insertion under local versus general anesthesia.
What They Found
Out of 685 patients treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, 31 (5%) received grommets, with 12 cases under local anesthesia and 19 under general anesthesia. There was a significant difference (P = 0.005) in the time from ENT referral to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, with a median of 1 day for the local anesthesia group compared to 8 days for the general anesthesia group.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
Canadian patients requiring grommet insertion for hyperbaric oxygen therapy might benefit from local anesthesia, potentially reducing wait times for their essential treatment. This approach could streamline care and minimize delays in receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Canadian Relevance
This study was conducted in Australia and has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This retrospective study was conducted at a single center with a relatively small sample size for the grommet insertion groups.
