What Researchers Did
Researchers evaluated the use of OtoScan Laser Assisted Myringotomy (OtoLAM) in five patients experiencing middle ear complications during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What They Found
All five patients tolerated the nine OtoLAM procedures performed on 11 ears without complications. Following the procedure, all patients immediately resumed their hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What This Means for Canadian Patients
This procedure could offer a temporary solution for Canadian patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy who experience middle ear barotrauma, potentially preventing treatment disruption. It might allow them to continue their essential HBO2 treatments more comfortably and without the need for more invasive interventions.
Canadian Relevance
This study has no direct Canadian connection.
Study Limitations
This study is limited by its very small sample size and preliminary nature.
